Science and I

Throughout my life I have always enjoyed the subject of science.  In high school, I took many science classes and did very well in all of them.  My favorite science class I took throughout high school was AP Biology.  I had an awesome teacher who made the material easy to learn and also very interesting.  My whole life, I have always have thought about being a veterinarian and after taking this course I knew that’s what I wanted to do.  I love working with animals and sciences came very easy to me so I thought it would be a great fit.  Going into freshman year of college I was a biology major on the pre-veterinary track.  This all changed very soon.  I started to really think about what jobs I would want to do after college and the one thing that I did not want to do was to be stuck working in a lab.  After knowing how hard it is to get into veterinary school and that I would be stuck with a biology degree I decided that it would be best for me to switch majors.  Now I am an accounting major.

  1. I am right there with you through all of this. I always loved science in high school and had amazing teachers who taught me to love the subject and thought it would be a big part of my future until I became realistic about what I really wanted to do. I support your decision to change to a business field in full!

  2. Science has always intrigued me, just as it intrigued you. It is an interesting subject to study, and it is usually never constant. From viruses, to dying stars like our sun. I agree with you: science should not be studied so much in a lab, but in the field.

  4. I am not much of a biology person, but I am glad you are still passionate about it while also rationing what you want for your future. I would be a science major if I was positive on job security and would not have to work in a lab. Great post!

  5. I hate that you gave up your dream of being a Veterinarian. If you always loved biology and you did well in AP Bio (which is basically college level work), I don't see why you thought you didn't have a chance at Vet School. You don't want to be stuck doing something you don't like. You could always do a Biology degree and then get at MBA to have a back up plan. Keep taking biology classes if you can, don't close that door, you'll regret it when you're working in a cubicle 9-5. There are plenty of careers in science that don't just involve "lab work". My 2 cents.

  6. Honestly, I know a lot of people who changed their major pretty quickly after they got here. One of my friends was pressured into bio by her parents, and honestly, it just wasn't for her! She's so, so much happier now, and I know most people are as well. Now, to be fair, I don't know many other people who would go from Bio to accounting! I hope you can be happy and fulfilled in your choices of switching majors, and you've switched to something you'll be okay in.
