Engaging the Public with Science

The service learning projects I participated in were the Earth Month at the Watauga Library, the movie about climate change, the Archie Carnival, and I volunteered at family fun day at the elementary school my sister teaches at in High Point.  When we were at the Watauga Library we made a poster for Earth Month which included facts on some professors in the geology department.  It also had facts on multiple national parks around us. When I volunteered at family fun day at the elementary school my sister teaches at we helped run multiple stations for the students of her school.  My favorite station that we worked at was the petting zoo. Things I would like to participate in the future are service opportunities with animals such as volunteering at the human society or the SPCA.

Scientists and science enthusiasts can help their community understand the nature of science in many ways.  Some of the ideas I have are things such as summer camps or after school camps for kids, free shows/demos, and going to schools to present things.  I feel like the main way to help the community understand is by starting with the kids.

  1. Todd, this one needs to be a little more in depth. You have the very basic information down, but you need to flesh it out a bit. Expand the section of what we did in the Public Library, include a photo of the actual Earth Month display, and describe your participation in the Archie carnival (include some photos of the kids playing your game!).

  2. That's great you got to help the children with there fun day. I think my favorite part would be petting the animals as well. Summer camps are also a great way to involve kids in science.
